Yesterday, Eddie Logan was once the nation’s leading standardbred horse trainer. Today, he’s a down-on-his-luck horseman who hasn’t been winning races like he used to because he refuses to be part of the small crowd of horsemen who rig races to win big. Eddie believes they are damaging the sport and the horses he loves.
But Eddie also needs to pay the bills. So, spurred on by his primary owner and against his better judgment, Eddie caves in to the pressure and agrees to cheat, just once. In a successful career training racehorses, it’s his singular act of dishonesty.
When it all goes wrong, he loses his stable of horses, his future, his livelihood, and nearly everything except the love of his wife, Jean.
Though she might seem like any ordinary, Midwestern school teacher, when faced with financial disaster, it turns out Jean Logan is anything but ordinary. Out of personal and financial desperation, Jean devises an illegal and dangerous wagering scheme at the horse races to help make ends meet. She allies herself with a formidable organized crime boss who owes Eddie a favor from long ago; and together they give him his chance at the biggest race of the year. If Eddie finds out, he’ll put a stop to Jean’s subterfuge; and if horse racing officials uncover Jean's scheme, Eddie will be banned from the life he loves…forever. In the process, Jean’s secret, illegal gambling ploy wins her millions of dollars. More importantly, she wins their lives back.
This is a story of women's empowerment, of love and deception, of surprise and terror, of laughter and danger, of love and infidelity, and of how doing the right thing can come from the most unexpected place.
And it’s true.
